1. Apply Ice
Its probably the most commonly heard and effective way to treat and reduce swelling. In case of any injury, the first thing our moms do to reduce swelling is to apply an ice pack. Ice makes the affected area cold and reduces the blood flow to that region and thus reducing edema. You can use ice cubes by covering the cubes in the washcloth and apply it for 8-10 minutes on the lips. Don’t apply force as it might cause injury and do more harm than good.
2. Warm Water to Get Rid of a Fat Lip from Kissing
All you’ll need is warm water and washcloth to reduce swelling from your lips. It has just the opposite effect from the point discussed above. Instead of lowering blood circulation, it increases the blood circulation in the affected area. Soak the washcloth in warm water and squeeze it to remove excess water from the washcloth. Now gently place it on the lips and keep it there for around 8-10 minutes. You’ll notice a considerable relief in swelling and pain after when you repeat this process for an hour.
3. Use Aloe Vera
We already know that aloe gel can do wonders when it comes to skin care. But you’ll be surprised to know that aloe gel is medicinal too and possess anti-inflammatory properties. So it’s no surprise that it’ll ease out the discomfort from the swollen lips. Extract the fresh aloe gel from aloe leaves and massage it gently on your lips. You’ll get relief from the burning sensation of the lips and reduction in swollen lips without any side effect. Also, aloe gel is effective on a mosquito bite, insect bite, or an allergic reaction.
4. Honey
The sweet tasting honey not only has edible use but is also prized for the topical application. Honey works on damaged lips because of its healing nature and anti-bacterial properties. When it comes to curing the swollen lips, all you need to do it apply the honey directly on the affected site. Use a cotton swab or cotton swab for applying honey on lips. If itching or irritation were keeping you awake, then the honey will ease it no time.
5. Turmeric and fuller’s earth ointment
Topical use of turmeric powder is not something unheard of. It’s anti-inflammatory, which means that it’ll reduce swelling. You can combine a pinch of turmeric with a tablespoon of fuller’s earth and make a paste in cold water. Apply this paste on your lips and let it sit undisturbed. When the paste becomes completely dry, gently wash your lips with lukewarm water.
6. Witch Hazel Extract Solution
Widely used as astringent, witch hazel extract fights inflammation and soothes the throbbing pain in lips. To make the solution add one tablespoon of witch hazel extract to half tablespoon of salt. Apply this solution on your lips with the aid of a cotton ball. Wait for 30 minutes then rinse off the solution with cold water. Use this twice a day till the swelling goes away.
7. How to Get Rid of a Fat Lip from Kissing with Coconut Oil
One of the easiest ways to treat swollen lips is by using coconut oil. All you need to do is massage a few drops of coconut oil on lips and leave it for a couple of hours. Coconut oil nourishes the skin and facilitates the healing process. Plus, the antimicrobial nature of coconut oil will keep harmful bacterias at bay.
8. Epsom Salt
Cuts and bruises on the lips due to kissing are quite common. These ailments can cause a great deal of pain as lips are susceptible. Epsom salt not only gives relief in severe pain but also quicken the healing process. Also, because of the anti-inflammatory properties, Epsom salt will reduce swelling too! To make Epsom salt solution add one tablespoon of Epsom salt in a cup of warm water. Soak the washcloth in this solution and put it on the lips. Repeat this process for 15 minutes.
9. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has many uses, and it’s quite useful for treating swelled lips. The edema and inflammation reducing properties make it useful for topical use. Before applying it on the lips dilute it with water as the direct application of apple cider vinegar can cause a burning sensation. Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to one tablespoon of water and dab it on the lips using a cotton ball or swab. Don’t leave it for too long and rinse it after a couple of minutes with water.
10. Black Tea Compression
Black tea works as an astringent because of the naturally present tannin in it. The soft tissues of lips heal faster because of this tannin. You can use black tea bags or wrap the black tea in a small cloth and keep it immersed in boiling water for around 5-10 minutes. Remove the tea bag from the water after that and put on your swollen lips for about 15 minutes. After several applications in a day, the swelling will come down.
